April 21st, 2008 Photoshop and drawingtablet My entry for DA's Okami contest. This was an incredibly fun picture to draw. I actually had the idea for this picture for quite a while, but I never got to the point of actually drawing it. When DA announced the Okami contest, it seemed like a golden opportunity to draw this picture. For those of you who don't know, Okami is a game for the PS2 which features a white wolf with a paintbrush for a tail. It's a pretty cool game and now it's coming to the Wii (Weeee). I probably won't win this contest, or in fact come in second or third, because there are some incredibly talented people partaking as well. Some of them can mimic the official style perfectly, while others can draw Ammy in hyper-photorealism. It's ok, I know when I'm outclassed. ;) The most important thing is that I had fun drawing this picture and perhaps it'll score me some extra pageviews to boot. So, about the subject. In the game there are several enemies. As you progress and get stronger, the enemies from the earlier stages become easier to beat (to a point when the mighty digging Yellow Imp becomes a total joke). As the player you basically end up toying with them and that's what Ammy is doing right here. If it had actually been possible to paint 'Kick me' signs on their backs, I probably would have done it with each and every one of them. I love how Ammy is usually drawn as a majestic white wolf, I really do. But a lot of people seem to forget what a complete fruitcake she really is. And it's that side of her I wanted to capture, since the whole majestic-wolf-deity-thing is ever so slightly overdone. ;) EDIT: May 10th, 2008: The contest results are in. As expected, I didn't win, though I must say I'm a little puzzled by the fact the judges thought these three pictures deserved to win. I've seen much better entrants than these. But regardless, I still had fun drawing this picture, so that's what counts. |
