He was supposed to be a hero...
But when the Light Sage Rauru called the young man back to the world after seven years, he had neglected to warn him it was not the same Hyrule he had known as a small boy. That the town lay in ruins. That the royal family had been slaughtered. That redeads where roaming right outside the temple doors...
It was all over before it began. He could only take a few steps on what was supposed to be his long journey to becoming a legend. Their gazes stopped him in his tracks, and just like that he joined their ranks...
But it did not end there. Destiny refused to let a minor set-back like death stand in its way. As it turned out, the pitiful hero was the bearer of the Triforce of Courage, which kept his mind intact but could not save his body. As one of Ganon's monsters, he continued to fight the tyrant. His body, now decaying and slowly falling apart, feels no pain, no fatigue. The Master Sword, the Blade of Evil's Bane, refuses to end the life of its chosen bearer. Nor will it break the curse and let him have his peace.
And so the tools of Light and Destiny cruelly conspired against him. Now bitter and resentful, Link's only choice is to use the curse against Ganon. He finds himself the leader of the redeads. They mindlessly follow him against their own creator. The former hero now spreads the curse himself, to increase their numbers, and march against Ganon's legions. He uses the Ocarina of Time to summon an eternal night, to protect his kind from the sun's fury.
He doesn't know why he keeps going. Perhaps it's because he does not know what else to do. Doubt gnaws at him. Defeating Ganon is his purpose, but does the goal justify the means? Is the darkness he himself spreads really worth it? And what will happen when he does kill Ganon? Will he be cured? Will he have peace? Or will the very tools that keep him sane and captive be taken from him, and will be turn into what he fears most? Whatever the outcome, it can't be worse than being trapped like this... So onwards he goes, fuelled by hatred...
So yeah, I joined another contest again. This time it's one that doesn't even have any prizes. I don't even know what I'm doing anymore...
So this contest is organized by the Game-Art group on DeviantArt. And this is the theme:
"A character or environment from your favourite childhood movie/cartoon as it would appear in a Mature-rated game." (Or as Pyritie put it: "ruin your childhood memories".)
Yes, that's right: "childhood movie/cartoon character". Link is a game character. So right now I don't even know whether my entry meets the requirements. I'm just awesome like that...
Anyway, I just wanted to point one more thing out: life as a redead isn't as bad as it looks. Sure, you're rotting away a little, but you get pretty cool abilities. That gaze/scream/freeze-people-in-place thing is pretty awesome. Link also doesn't feel pain any longer, nor can he drown. And while the rest of his kind are very slow, he still has his old speed and power thanks to the power of the Triforce. He'll do the slow, bendy, turning-around thing to throw you off, scream/freeze, charge in as usual and kill you. Or... you know... do what redeads usually do. And the army of redead followers aren't too bad as company goes. Sure they don't talk much, but with them every night is Danse Macabre night. And err... the night never ends. ;)
