Pen and Ink tutorial: Linedrawing
May, 2005

Like I said, this is my favourite bit. Why? Because you get to doodle all over your drawing and it will give you a chance to draw away attention from any mistakes you may have made during the inking bit. And in my case, most people don't even see what I'm drawing, until my pens come around to work their magic.
Ahem... Well, let's not get into that right now...

Get your pens out.
The first thing we do is draw a fine line around the contours of the image. Just follow the pencil lines you like. They should still be shining through the ink. Ink is transparent after all...
Get your eraser and start to remove those last pencil lines. They're stubborn little things, I know, but try to get them out of the way as much as possible. Now make the most outer lines of the drawing (the contours of the figure) extra fat. As you can see, the effect is that Dimmy will stand out from her surroundings considerably. This is also the technique used in most comicbooks. It provides the image with a certain clearity. Everything just makes more sense this way.
Groovy! Now start to exagerate the lines. Make the lines even thicker. Add the leaves, but keep them thin. Add details too. Draw lines in the hair to give them volume and texture. Dont forget to leave some parts of the hair white, to make it look reflective.

At this point you can do one of two things:
1. You could call it a day. Congratulations, you've just finished a very nice picture!
2. You could go for that extra effect, by adding shadow effects with the fineliners. This is not without risk, though. I've messed up plenty of pictures, trying to make them just perfect. The choice is up to you. If it works, the effects can be just amazing.

For this tutorial I'll attempt to show you how a picture might look if you do add the shadow effects (more or less correctly).
Well...
I'm not really disappointed, but I think I could have done better... It's really easy to overdo it, you know? I like the way the grass turned out, but unfortunately Dimmy sort of looks as if she has a small beard. Sato turned out great, though... And the sword definitely benefited from the extra treatment too.

This concludes my Pen and Ink tutorials. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did making it. Good luck on your own attempts at making Pen and Ink drawings! If you'd ever like to show me some of your works, feel free to send them in. :)
