I felt like experimenting a bit with Photoshop 9.0's features, since I was still new to this
program. So when I started making a background, I had no idea how it would turn out. It's
always great fun to fiddle around with functions you are unfamiliar with. It makes me feel
like the proverbial kid in a candystore! ^_^ First go to your background layer. I started by picking two colors which would fit Hitmonlee's colorscheme. In this case I chose yellow and a brownish-orange color. Select 'Filter - Render - Clouds' and the computer will create a sceenfilling effect like the one you can see on the left. That's a pretty nice start, but we're far from done. So I created new layer and picked new brush called 'Rough Round Bristle'. I drew some random stripes on the background in black, brown and yellow. It looked... well... awful. So I decided to mess around a bit with the filters and ended up pinching and twirling the brushstrokes. Still looked bad. So then I fiddled a bit with the layersettings. When I changed the setting to 'Soft Light', the strokes discretely blended in with the rest of the background. I was actually quite happy with that and decided to keep it that way. But I still wasn't done. Hitmonlee still felt as if he was floating in the background, so I created a new layer and drew a shadow underneath and behind him. Then I created two new layers on top of Hitmonlee and drew light and shadow effects on him. The second image on the left shows how Hitmonlee blends more with the background now.

That was pretty nice, but there was still one Photoshop feature I was dying to try out: a
brush shaped like a leaf. So I enlarged the brush, picked a white color and tried it out.
It was pretty neat, even though I had to go over it a few times with an eraser, also
shaped like a leaf, and I moved the layer around a bit. And the picture to the left shows the final result. By the time I was finished, the Photoshop-file was 146 MB and my computer was quite laggy. My pc has over 1 GB RAM-memory, so it can take it (if only barely), but if your computer is less powerful then I recommend that you either don't add a background, or that you shrink a copy of the image first. I hope this little tutorial was helpful to you.
