The males have longer whiskers than the females. Sprites from: www.pokemonelite2000.com.

So now we'll start drawing Rattata. First draw two ovals. They don't have to be perfectly round for what we want to draw, so don't worry too much about it. One circle will become the head and the other circle will become part of Rattata's hindleg. Now connect these two ovals, like on the picture and also draw the snout. I've drawn Rattata with an open mouth, but if you are having trouble with the snout, try drawing the Pokémon with its mouth closed. It might be a little easier. Now add eyes, ears and whiskers to the head. This Rattata will be a male, so he needs to have extra long whiskers.
Notice how I've drawn Rattata's legs as if they are part of a wooden doll. I did this to determine where the Pokémon's joints and muscles will be. Even is you don't intend to draw these anatomical details in the final drawing (the anime often doesn't show the joints and muscles either), it might still be a good idea the sketch them, because it will help you to make the picture look more realistic and natural. Finally add the details, such as the nostrills, the pupils, the little slit between the teeth and the hands and feet. I usually draw the tail last, although there is no particular reason for this.
